Retro Girl’s Pink Bedroom Mood Board

It is time for another room makeover. This time we’re giving our daughter’s bedroom a refresh – at her request.
When I designed her nursery, she wasn’t even born yet. Although we’ve made a few updates over the years, like the cane headboard, cane nightstand and macrame feather decor, we haven’t gotten her input for any room updates.
She is six years old now and has quite the opinion about decor, colors, and all the things. So we sat down (multiple times) at the computer and looked for ideas and inspiration together.
She is a total girly-girl and requested pink and flowers. So that was our jumping board for this retro girl’s pink bedroom mood board.
After much debate, we decided to relent and let her paint her bedroom walls pink. Paint may seem like a big commitment, but let’s be honest. Guys, it is seriously only paint. It was one day of work and less than $200 in supplies.
She loves the new pink walls and if we need to repaint in a few years when she hates it or when it is time to move out, we’ll put it back to something neutral. Easy peasy. In the meantime, just paint your walls whatever color you want.

Plans for Pink Bedroom Makeover
After we decided on pink walls, the next order of business was the bedding. There are so many options online, so I narrowed things now for her and we only looked at the kid’s bedding line at Target, Pillowfort. It was less overwhelming than giving her free reign on Amazon or other retailers.
Once we found the bedding she loves with flowers, I was happy to point her in the right direction of retro and groovy 70’s vibes because that what I could tell she was loving based on her first few selections.
We opted for pink walls and white flower vinyl stickers to decorate the walls (a compromise to wallpaper which she wanted to do everywhere), floral bedding, colorful rug in a different pattern, velvet pink curtains, and a few other finishing touches.
She asked for a new headboard and wanted a “cloud” bed. We are making one because we couldn’t find one to purchase in a Queen size (but there were a lot of twin sizes that we’re using as inspiration). Stay tuned for more on the cloud headboard, which we’ll be working on next.
We found fun and affordable artwork and we’re jazzing up some plain wooden frames with wooden beads and paint that will look great for wall decor.
Another ask was a tent that she could play in. It took some time but we finally found one that was small enough to fit at the end of her bed and is a mushroom shape, so it is definitely “on theme”.
Another great find was the scallop nightstand that I just adore. Scallop decor and furniture is SO in right now and it works perfectly with the flower power theme because it reminds me of petals. She didn’t love how “boring and white” the nightstand was so I gave her the option to put more flower vinyl stickers on it. We’ll see how that goes.
Overall the room design is definitely more colorful and a bit busier than I would have chosen if I was designing her room without her input, but I’m trying my best to let her have freedom and fun while keeping her reigned in to make sure colors match and things are cohesive for the most part.
I truly want her to love her room and love interior design as much as I do, so working together and teaching her a few things along the way is the best way for her to learn.
Stay tuned as we continue working on more projects in her room!
